This "war" was a series of wars fought between England and France from 1337 to 1453. The conflicts erupted over England's claim to land in France and the assertion of Edward III of England that he was "king of France." The French won a decisive battle at Orleans in 1429 under the leadership of Joan of Arc. When the wars finally ended, the British were bankrupt and had lost control of all French territory except Calais.
